
Track & Field Alumna Cunningham to Represent USA at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - NC State track & field program alumna Gabriele Cunningham ('19) will travel to Tokyo, Japan, as part of the 2020 US Olympic Team, as announced by USA Track & Field (USATF) on Tuesday. She is set to compete in the women's 100m hurdles and will be the first graduate of the NC State program to become an Olympian.

Cunningham ran a personal-best 12.53 in the finals of the 100m hurdles at the Olympic Trials, placing fourth.
The Charlotte, N.C., native holds school records in the outdoor 100m and 200m in addition to the indoor 60m, 200m, 300m and 60m hurdles. She additionally maintains a top-five program mark in the 100m hurdles.
Cunningham is the second program participant to make the US Olympic Team. Joan Benoit Samuelson competed for NC State from 1977-78 before transferring and completing her degree at Bowdoin College. Samuelson won the gold medal in the inaugural women's marathon at the 1984 Olympics.
