CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 15 NC State baseball (30-17) came up short in a tightly-contested Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title game with Duke (32-20), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C.
The loss snapped a 67-game streak of the Wolfpack suffering a shutout, as the last time came on May 24, 2019 against Florida State in the ACC Championship (11-0 result).
The game-winning run for the Blue Devils came in the fourth inning via a sac fly. Ethan Murray led off the inning with a double to left field, moved to third on a fly out to deep center field and scored on Peter Matt's fly ball to right field.
The contest was a pitcher's duel with just a combined nine hits tallied in the matchup. Wolfpack starting pitcher Matt Willadsen worked a strong 4.2 innings, scattering four hits and fanning six batters, then gave way to Chris Villaman who tossed 4.1 hitless innings with six strikeouts to keep the Pack in the ball game until the very end.
Three of the final five innings the Pack managed to put a runner on base, but just couldn't drive in the tying run.
Additionally, J.T. Jarrett and Tyler McDonough were named to the 2021 ACC All-Tournament team on Sunday for their strong efforts throughout the week.
NC State will now turn its attention to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will air Monday at 12 p.m. on ESPN.
