ROME, Ga. – The No. 3 seed and fourth-ranked NC State women's tennis team (16-5) came up short, 4-2, in Friday afternoon's ACC Championships quarterfinal matchup with No. 6 seed and 16th-ranked Georgia Tech.
Due to inclement weather, the match was played indoors at the Rome Tennis Center. The Wolfpack claimed the first two team points of the match, but Georgia Tech took first sets on five singles courts and rallied off a pair of straight-sets wins to tie the team score. The Yellow Jackets then closed out the win with a pair of three setters on courts four and six.
The doubles point went to NC State in Friday's match. The fourth-ranked Wolfpack duo of Adriana Reami and Jaeda Daniel took advantage of an early break on their way to cruising past No. 21 Gia Cohen and Ava Hrastar, 6-2.
Georgia Tech took the court one victory, but NC State freshmen Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki already owned a three-game lead over Monika Dedaj and Carol Lee at that point. The Wolfpack duo earned the 6-3 win, their 11th straight as a pair.
In singles action, Reami was the only member of the Pack to take her first set. She quickly added another team point for the Pack with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cohen on court three.
Lee got the Yellow Jackets on the board with a straight-sets win over Rencheli, and Georgia Tech then knotted the team score with No. 6 Kenya Jones' straight-sets win over fifth-ranked Rogers.
Despite all dropping their opening frames, Alana Smith, Daniel and Lexi Keberle all battled to force third sets in their respective matches on courts two, four and six.
Daniel fought valiantly in her third set, but No. 119 Ava Hrastar came out on top with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory to give the Yellow Jackets their third point in a row and the 3-2 lead in the team score. No. 21 Smith and No. 20 Victoria Flores went into a tiebreaker for the third set in their ranked matchup, but Mahak Jain closed out the 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Keberle to give Georgia Tech the win.
NC State will await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which is set to air on NCAA.com on Monday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
