SOUTH BEND, Ind. – NC State baseball (16-12, 9-11 ACC) plated runs in each of the first three innings en route to a 5-2 win over seventh-ranked Notre Dame (17-7, 15-7 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium.
With the win, the Wolfpack evened the series to force a rubber game Sunday.
The Pack quickly scored two in the first thanks to a Luca Tresh RBI single and Jose Torres sacrifice fly on one out, then added runs in the second and third on an RBI groundout and a single by Torres with a runner in scoring position, respectively, to take a four-run lead.
Notre Dame was quiet until the sixth when it managed to get runners on with two outs, and then Carter Putz delivered with a 2-RBI double to cut into his team's deficit. Just three Irish batters were able to reach base through the first five innings.
Devonte Brown answered in the eighth when he led off with an opposite field home run to right field, his fifth of the year, giving the Pack a late 5-2 advantage.
In each of the final three innings, the Irish could only get one runner into scoring position thanks to a dominant relief appearance by Evan Justice. The southpaw tossed the final 3.1 innings of the contest, yielding just two hits and fanning four to pick up his second save of the year.
