BRIGHTON, Mass. – NC State baseball (13-11, 7-10 ACC) used a four-run seventh inning to rally back from a 4-1 deficit and earn a 5-4 win over Boston College (14-15, 4-13 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton, Mass.
With the win, the Wolfpack clinched its second series of the season and remains perfect on the road with a 7-0 record. Additionally, the squad extended its win streak to four.
Behind its comeback win was solid pitching from Sam Highfill (2-2) and Evan Justice to keep the Pack in the ball game. Highfill matched his career long of seven innings and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced before exiting the contest. Justice hurled two shutout innings to pick up his first save of the year.
The Eagles struck first when Luke Gold drove in Sal Frelick from third with a base hit to left field in the first inning, but Devonte Brown's leadoff home run in the third inning, his fourth of the season, knotted the score up at one.
BC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third to take its lead back thanks to Frelick's fielder's choice with a runner at third and Cody Morissette's RBI double down the right field line.
The Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Jack Cunningham led off the side with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then crossed home plate with Peter Burns' single up the middle.
NC State surged back in the seventh, plating four runs on three hits and an error to take its first lead of the game. Brown and J.T. Jarrett started the side with a walk and base hit on one out, and a single by Austin Murr and double by Tyler McDonough followed by a two-base BC error gave the Pack a 5-4 advantage.
Boston College tried to take the game into extra innings as Gold led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to right center and moved to third on a groundout, but Justice struck out pinch hitter Ramon Jimenez to end the attempt.
