RALEIGH – The NC State softball team was balanced on all cylinders, winning its fifth-straight game in its ACC series opener against Georgia Tech. The Wolfpack won 7-4 on eight hits in the first meeting between the two programs since March 18, 2018.
The top of the lineup continues to be dangerous for NC State (9-2, 5-2 ACC), as the Pack's 1-2-3 hitters collected two hits apiece. Angie Rizzi went 2-for-2 on the day with a home run, two RBI and a walk.
Sydney Nester earned the win after pitching 6.2 innings of relief. Nester (3-1) allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Tech came out quick with its offense, taking two home runs and a 3-0 lead off NC State starting pitcher, Abby Trahan. Nester entered in relief and quickly shut them down and would only allow one unearned run from the Yellow Jackets the remainder of the game.
The Wolfpack jumped on several Georgia Tech miscues in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs without a hit in the bottom of the first. The runs came thanks to four-straight walks, a wild pitch and a Yellow Jacket throwing error.
The lead doubled for NC State in the second inning, 6-3, thanks to Rizzi's two-run home run. After giving a run back to Georgia Tech, back-to-back singles by Sam Russ and Tatyana Forbes scored the seventh run of the night for NC State.
Down to its last three outs, Georgia Tech would draw a walk to put a runner on base before Nester recorded back-to-back strikeouts, sealing her third win of the season.
