RALEIGH – NC State baseball (5-9) got back in the win column on Tuesday evening in its first road game of the season as it held off UNCW (12-6), 5-3, at Brooks Field.
The victory snapped a five-game loss streak and was its first since March 5 against Miami. The result additionally marked the 16th win in its last 17 meetings with the Seahawks.
UNCW scored first by way of the home run, as Kip Brandenburg and Matt Suggs led off with back-to-back long balls in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third, leadoff hitter Brooks Baldwin looked to make it 3-0 for the Seahawks with a ball to deep left field, but Terrell Tatum made a Sports Center Top 10 play by reaching over the left field fence and robbing him of the home run.
Tatum took that momentum into the fourth inning and put the Wolfpack on the board as he drove in Luca Tresh, who reached on a two-out double, from second with his first triple of the year to right field.
The Pack plated two runs in the fifth to take its first lead of the night. Devonte Brown swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a leadoff homer to left field, then Austin Murr's one-out sacrifice fly to deep center field scored Vojtech Mensik.
UNCW's Cole Weiss led off the sixth with the team's third home run of the game to right field to knot the score back up at three, but NC State answered in its half of the seventh when Noah Soles drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout to second.
Jose Torres added to the Pack's lead in the seventh with an RBI single that dropped just fair of the right field line. Torres plated Tyler McDonough from third who reached on a walk then moved to third on Tatum's single up the middle.
The Seahawks tried to rally in the ninth as it got two on base via a Wolfpack error and two-out walk to put the game-winning run at the plate, but Murr ran down a pop fly to shallow right field to close the game out.
