GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State cross country junior Kelsey Chmiel and head coach Laurie Henes have garnered ACC annual awards, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Chmiel was named 2021 ACC Cross Country Performer of the Year while Henes tabbed ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year honors for the sixth-straight year.
Chmiel recorded an impressive junior campaign in which she was the first finisher for NC State in five meets. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native was the ACC and the NCAA Southeast Regional Champion and placed sixth at the NCAA Championships. With her ACC Championship victory, Chmiel became the third consecutive individual conference champion from NC State and garnered her third All-ACC cross country accolades. In addition to her All-ACC honors, Chmiel earned All-Region and All-America laurels.
The award is the second of the season for Chmiel as she was named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Runner of the Year on Nov. 23.
Henes' ACC honors are her sixth in a row and her seventh overall. In the 2021 season, she led the Wolfpack women to the team's first NCAA Championship and third national championship. Her squad won its sixth-straight ACC title, tying the lowest-ever score by an ACC Championship team with 20 points. Under her leadership, a program-record five runners attained All-America status while six athletes tabbed All-Region and All-ACC honors.
The award is third of the season for Henes after she was named USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year.
