RALEIGH – No. 5 NC State women's basketball (3-1) closed out a perfect weekend of Preseason WNIT round-robin action with a dominant 100-52 win over visiting Towson (3-1) on Monday night.
After scoring in double figures (10 points) against Wofford, transfer guard Diamond Johnson enjoyed the best night of her still early NC State career with a team-leading 16 points. The sophomore shot 7-of-10 in just under 20 minutes of action.
Johnson's performance led another balanced scoring attack for the Pack that involved five players hitting double digits on the night. Elissa Cunane followed her with 15 points, Jakia Brown-Turner scored 13, Camille Hobby tallied 12 points off the bench and Raina Perez tacked on another 11. Perez and Brown-Turner hit three triples each, with Perez's all coming in the third quarter, and Hobby shot 6-of-7 off some great touches in the post.
Led by Hobby's tally, NC State enjoyed a productive night from its bench players who scored 55 of the team's 100 points. Madison Hayes led the Pack in a pair of categories with an impressive 12 rebounds and six assists in 24 minutes of action.
NC State limited Towson to just 29.6 percent (21-of-71) shooting, and the Tigers went 3-of-31 (.097) from three-point range after coming into the game averaging 9.3 triples per outing and 40 percent shooting from distance. The Wolfpack, meanwhile, knocked down 10 threes and shot 55.9 percent (38-of-68) in its second time hitting 100 points under the leadership of Wes Moore.
The team also out-rebounded Towson 54-30 and had a 44-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Cunane scored 10 seconds into the game, and NC State never turned back as it led for 39:49 of the game's 40 minutes. Towson made just one shot from the field (1-of-18) in the first quarter as three of its five first-quarter points came at the free throw line.
The Wolfpack led 26-5 after the first 10 minutes, and it only extended its lead from there. Towson went nearly 10 minutes (7:18 in the first quarter to 7:45 in the second quarter) without a field goal. NC State led by 30 (50-20) at the half and went on to score the first 14 of the second half to continue piling on to its lead. Jessica Timmons hit a three to put the Pack at the century mark and give the team its largest lead of the night (100-50) with 16 seconds remaining.
NC State will close out its season-opening stretch of home games on Friday, Nov. 19 when it hosts Kansas State for the final game of the Preseason WNIT. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum, and the contest will be aired live on ACCNX.
