WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – NC State women's soccer (7-7-2, 3-5-0 ACC) suffered a 1-0 loss to Wake Forest (13-3-0, 5-3-0 ACC) on Thursday evening at Spry Stadium.
In what was a physical match between both squads, the Demon Deacons scored late in the first half and managed to hold onto its lead until the clock ran out.
All seven of its losses this year have been by a one-goal margin, and all of them have been to teams ranked or receiving votes for the latest national polls. Both squads are receiving votes in this week's poll.
Two of NC State's four shots in the opening part of the contest were on the brink of finding the back of the net. Annika Wohner took a direct free kick in the 26th minute that missed just high, then Jameese Joseph made a great run in the 33rd minute from midfield but her strike from the top of the box went just wide of the left post.
Wake struck in the 38th minute when Giovanna DeMarco's finish from the top of the box went right to goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, but the ball fell out of her grasp and rolled into the back of the net.
Fernanda Soto looked to even the score just after the goal with a shot from distance, but it went right to goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks.
The Wolfpack once again looked to find the equalizer right away in the second half, as Lulu Guttenberger took another direct free kick from above the 18-yard box but it was saved by Parks.
Joseph made one final attempt in the 90th minute with a finish from distance that went wide left.
Echezarreta tallied six saves in the match, marking her sixth time in seven matches with four or more saves.
NC State returns home Sunday to face Syracuse in its final home match of the season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium, and the contest will be broadcast on the ACCNX.
