RALEIGH – After spending its last two weekends getting individual singles and doubles matches in the books, the eighth-ranked NC State women's tennis team will step into dual match again on Wednesday afternoon. The Wolfpack is set to take on the No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks on the road, with first serve set for 1 p.m. from the Carolina Tennis Center.
Due to health and safety recommendations, matches at South Carolina are closed to the public.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Pack spent the past weekend competing in matches against North Carolina, Duke and Virginia as part of the UNC Invitational. The event pitted an experienced NC State squad up against the trio of teams that all join the Pack in the national top 10.
NC State dominated the final day of action against the Cavaliers, winning five of six doubles matches and four of five singles contests that were all played at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh.
MILESTONE FOR ROGERS:
Fifth-year senior Anna Rogers picked up her 100th career singles victory on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over Virginia's Hibah Shaikh. The Stamford, Conn., native entered the season needing just five singles victories to reach the mark after a 2020 dual season that was cut short.
She joined teammate and fellow senior Adriana Reami as the only two players in program history to reach that mark, and Rogers is the first player in NC State women's tennis history to reach the century mark in both singles and doubles.
PACKING THE RANKINGS:
For the second season in a row, the NC State women's tennis team starts its dual match campaign in the national top 10 as it checked in at No. 8 in the Oracle ITA Division I Preseason Team Rankings that were released Thursday. That number ties as the best preseason ranking for the program after it was also ranked eighth to start the year last season.
In addition to the team rankings, NC State starts the year with four players featured in the individual rankings. The Pack boasts two top-20 doubles pairs - Rogers/Alana Smith (No. 2) and Reami/Jaeda Daniel (No. 16 - and three top-40 singles players - Smith (No. 23), Rogers (No. 35) and Reami (No. 38).
SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA:
The Gamecocks were ranked 14th nationally in the Oracle ITA Preseason Team Rankings after posting an 8-4 dual record in 2020. Three South Carolina players are featured in the singles rankings - No. 30 Megan Davies, No. 34 Mia Horvit and No. 93 Emma Shelton - and two doubles pairs are ranked as well - No. 20 Shelton/Chinellato and No. 29 Horvit/Davies.
South Carolina has already played a pair of dual matches, taking home early-season wins over East Tennessee State and Coastal Carolina.
NC State and South Carolina last faced off on Jan. 18, 2020 in Raleigh. The Pack cruised to the 6-1 win over the then-No. 9 Gamecocks for what at the time marked the program's first-ever victory over a top-10 opponent.
UP NEXT:
After its match against South Carolina, the Wolfpack will turn its attention to the 2021 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Raleigh is one of seven host sites for the weekend as NC State makes its fifth consecutive appearance in the tournament. The Pack, which is the top seed in its region, will take on Northwestern at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24.
The remainder of NC State's 2021 dual-match slate will be released following the conclusion of ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
