CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team made the return to the pitch for its sole exhibition match of the season, falling 1-0 to rival North Carolina inside the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening.
UNC put its goal away in the 58th minute as Giovanni Montesdeoca finished from close range off the assist from Jonathan Jimenez.
The Pack created a great opportunity for the equalizer just minutes later off a free kick. Tal Segev sent a ball to the goal line where Jamie Smith centered a pass to Pau Palacin, but the freshman's shot went off the crossbar.
The Wolfpack managed to withstand early pressure from the Tar Heels. Kuda Muskwe made an attempt on target in the 34th minute, but that shot was saved by UNC's Alec Smir. The teams ended up taking a scoreless tie into the half.
After completing 90 minutes of regulation, the squads continued play with a 45-minute overtime period during which UNC converted a penalty kick for the only score.
NC State will officially open the 2020 fall season on the road at Duke on Sept. 26. That match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start from Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
