DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team (0-1-0) battled but ultimately endured a 1-0 double overtime defeat to Duke (1-1-0) in its season opener on Saturday evening.
The teams fought through 109:26 of scoreless action before the Blue Devils notched the game winner with 34 seconds remaining in the match.
Duke took control of the ball off of an NC State goal kick. Pablo Pedregosa warded off the early stages of the Blue Devil attack by heading the ball out of the box, but Duke's Peter Stroud then gained possession. He sent it to teammate Nick Pariano, who was left open from 12 yards out and put a low ball past two Wolfpack defenders and bouncing into the lower left corner of the goal.
After taking a 0-0 score into the halftime break, NC State controlled a vast majority of the possession for the remainder of regulation and outshot the Blue Devils 5-2 in the second half.
Momentum swung in the favor of the Wolfpack when Pau Palacin saw what ended up being the best chance of the night for NC State. The freshman took a shot in the 64th minute that was saved by Duke goalkeeper Will Pulisic, and Palacin's strike on the rebound from that save missed to the right.
Pedregosa sent a header over the goal off a corner in the 75th minute, and Aidan Foster and George Asomani both ripped shots in the final two minutes of the period that were deflected before the match went into extra time.
NC State will continue road action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when it makes the trip to Winston Salem, N.C., to take on Wake Forest. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and the Demon Deacons is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live streaming coverage provided by ACCNX.
