FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior catcher Patrick Bailey was named to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List, as recently announced by the organization. The award is based on performance at the plate, academics and integrity.
Â
The watch list consists of 36 players representing 16 conferences around the country, including all five power conferences. Bailey is one of two players from the Atlantic Coast Conference on the list, alongside North Carolina's Aaron Sabato.
Â
Last year, the Greensboro, N.C. native started 60 games behind the plate, compiling a .288 clip with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percentage. Defensively, he committed just five errors in 476 chances for a .989 fielding percentage and threw out 33 percent of base runners attempting to swipe a bag.
Â
Thanks to a strong 2019 campaign, he was named a Buster Posey Award Semifinalist, awarded to the top collegiate catcher of the year, and spent the summer with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Additionally, he was an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region honoree, First Team All-ACC selection and Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American.
Â
This season, he was named a consensus preseason All-American and earned a spot on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List.
Â
The award was created by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. It started out in 2017 as an honor to the top hitter in Texas, then expanded in 2019 to a regional award covering all DI programs in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In 2020, it became a national award.
Â
The winner of the BBCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club.
