RALEIGH – In the final game of the weekend, NC State had its three-game win streak snapped, dropping a 7-3 game against RV/RV Illinois. The Wolfpack finished the 2020 Big Ten/ACC Challenge with a 3-1 record, the team's best in the challenge since its inception in 2016. The ACC won the 2020 edition of the challenge, marking the conference's third win in four years, with a 25-19 record.
Sam Russ recorded her second-consecutive game with multiple base hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. The junior is a perfect 8-for-8 on stolen bases this season and now has exactly 57 stolen bases, tying her for second all-time with Tyler Ross in career stolen bases.
"I'm super proud of this team," said Patrick-Swift. "Two solid teams came in here receiving votes and we came out and played really well. Today we fell a little short, but I'm proud of the team, proud of their resilience. We had some comeback wins and big hits, so it was a fun weekend and we're excited about how we opened it up at home."
Tatyana Forbes added two hits, going 9-for-14 (.643) over the weekend with a total of four RBIs, a double, triple and four stolen bases. The senior is now hitting an ACC-best .548 (among eligible batters with 15 or more at bats) while also leading the league with 17 hits.
Devin Wallace started the game in the circle, going 2.2 innings with three hits and three runs allowed. Wallace (2-2) struck out three while allowing three walks before sophomore Sydney Nester entered the game. Nester went the distance with three innings where she allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Batting as the away team, NC State struck first with a leadoff single from Russ. With Russ at second, following a stolen base, Forbes knocked an RBI-single into center field for a 1-0 NC State lead.
Illinois answered right back with 2-1 lead off a two-run home run from Delaney Rummel, who hit two home runs last night against the Wolfpack. A two-out RBI-single from Brigette Nordberg tied the game, 2-2, before Illinois took its go-ahead lead on its own two-out RBI-single.
The bulk of Illinois runs came off a grand slam in the fifth inning, which made up for the remaining four runs. The Wolfpack faced a seventh-inning deficit for the third time in the last four games. A lead off walk and single to right field put two runners on with no outs. Forbes recorded a rare ground out, but successfully advanced the runners. Two more ground outs would end the game, but not before Morris would push one run across the plate for an RBI.
