RALEIGH – Head coach Elliott Avent reached another milestone in his career on Friday afternoon, as he picked up his 1,100th career win to start his 24th season at the helm of the Wolfpack. The victory came thanks to a 4-0 shutout win over James Madison on opening day.
Avent is just one of eight active head coaches to reach the milestone.
This marks the fifth time in the last six years that NC State has opened its season with a win. It is also the Pack's fifth-straight win over the Dukes in the all-time series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Jonny Butler put the Pack on the board in the second with his two-run homer to right center. Prior to his at bat, Devonte Brown led off the frame with a double to right field for the first hit of the game amongst either team.
-In the fifth inning Patrick Bailey drew a two-out walk, then Brown hit his second double of the day to right center to score him from first.
-Austin Murr tacked on what would be the final run for the Pack in the seventh as he doubled down the right field line and a pair of wild pitches brought him home.
-James Madison tried to rally in the ninth, putting a pair of runners on base with two outs, but senior Kent Klyman shut the door with a strikeout.
QUICK HITS
-In his first start of the season, Nick Swiney picked up the win as he went a career-long seven innings and fanned a career-high 11 batters.
- Klyman, who was recently named to National Collegiate Baseball Writer Association's (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, was credited with the save as he entered the game with the game-tying run on deck.
-Brown lead the team with a 2-for-3 outing, and his two doubles were the most in a single game for him.
-Brad Debo extended his hit and reached base streak to four, dating back to May 25, 2019 vs. Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament.
