CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – NC State volleyball won its second-straight match in a hard-fought victory against Virginia, Saturday evening in Memorial Gym. Saturday also marked the sixth-consecutive match where NC State has defeated the Hoos.
Jade Parchment continued her dominant performance this fall with a match-high 15 kills, while also contributing nine digs and four blocks. The hot hitting trio was completed by 13 kills from Melissa Evans and 10 from Lydia Adam.
NC State (2-4) had an overall balanced attack with all five of the team's hitters recording at least five kills. The Pack's middle blockers, Riley Shaak and Pam Chukwujekwu, were errorless hitting a combined .433.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolfpack offense was slow to get going, hitting .087 in the first set. Despite holding a 17-11 lead in the second set, the Pack went down late after an 8-1 run by Virginia. Shaak halted the run out of a timeout with her fifth kill of the night, before Evans launched the Pack back into the lead, 20-19. Virginia would tie the match once more before NC State ended it, outscoring the Hoos 5-1.
The tightly contested match continued well into the third set with numerous ties and lead changes up to 12-12 where NC State pushed ahead for good on a kill by Shaak. The Cavaliers would continue to be relentless, cutting the Pack's lead down to one on four separate occasions. However, the arm of Parchment proved too much to handle for the Hoos as she recorded three kills and a service ace down the stretch.
Evans had her best performance in the fourth set, hitting .500 with four kills to help close out the match. Ahead by a narrow margin, 12-10, the senior helped kick start a 9-3 run that would break the set wide open. With the Pack ahead by seven, 20-13, Virginia made a late surge with two kills and a block before Adam laid down match point for her 10th kill of the night.
