NC State withstood a 15-0 UVA rally in the second half to win
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – NC State made enough plays late to hold off Virginia, knocking off the defending National Champions, 53-51, Monday night inside John Paul Jones Arena.
The win is the first for NC State in John Paul Jones Arena. The Pack had lost its last eight games inside the Cavaliers arena that opened in 2006. Before tonight, NC State's last win in Charlottesville was March 2, 2005.
NC State has now won three straight games and improves to 14-5, 5-3 ACC while Virginia falls to 12-6, 4-4 ACC.
NC State came out of the halftime locker room and jumped on the Cavaliers quickly.
C.J. Bryce opened the second half with a three-pointer and after UVA answered with a three on the next possession, Devon Daniels hit one on the ensuing possession for NC State.
UVA cut the lead to 34-31 a minute later, but the Pack responded with an 8-0 run as the Pack held Virginia without a point for over six minutes.
NC State took its largest lead of the game, 42-31, on a Bryce three-pointer with 13:51 remaining.
But Bryce's three-pointer was the last NC State points for over 10 minutes as the Pack went scoreless and allowed UVA to run off a 15-0 run to take a 46-42 lead on a Francisco Caffaro lay-up with 4:37 to go.
Jericole Hellems broke NC State's scoring drought with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one with 3:38 to play.
UVA would tack on a free throw to extend its lead to two, but Markell Johnson came down on the next possession and hit a three-pointer to give NC State a 48-47 lead with 2:44 remaining.
The Pack would not trail again as NC State held Virginia without a field goal for the final 4:37 of the game.
D.J. Funderburk led the Pack led the Pack with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added a team-high tying five rebounds. The Cleveland, Ohio native fouled out of the game with 6:48 to play.
Bryce added 13 points and five rebounds. Markell Johnson finished the game with seven points, five assists and zero turnovers.
Danny Dixon played the most minutes of his NC State career and tied for team-high honors with five rebounds.
The Pack took a 28-26 lead into the halftime break. After Virginia scored on the first possession of the game, NC State ran off the next six points to take a 6-2 lead, two minutes into the game. That proved to be the biggest lead of the first half as the two teams combined for seven lead changes and seven ties in the opening 20 minutes. The Pack only had one turnover in the first half. Funderburk was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to lead NC State with 12 points in the first half.
NC State is back in action Saturday when it plays at Georgia Tech. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox Sports South.
