SOUTH BEND, IND. – Melissa Evans' 12 kills led the Wolfpack in a three-set loss Sunday afternoon to Notre Dame. Evans has now tallied double-digit kills in 13 of 14 matches this season, including 11 straight. Despite NC State out digging them, Notre Dame (9-3) came out on top by set scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-20.
The Pack had three players in double-digit digs led by Grace Irvin's 13. Nina Sharpton also had 13, pairing that with 30 assists for her second consecutive double-double. Jade Parchment contributed 12 digs in addition to four kills. Jessica Kemp led the blocking game, getting her hands on all six of the team's blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After trading the opening points back-and-forth, NC State took a 10-6 lead and held it until Notre Dame tied the set at 16 with back-to-back kills from Sydney Bent and Lauren Wenzel. The Fighting Irish eventually took an 18-16 lead after a block and kill from Bent. Down 22-19, Kemp and Sharpton teamed up on a big block with hopes of extending the set. Facing set point, Sharpton successfully executed a dump over the net for a kill but Notre Dame came right back with a kill of their own to secure the set.
The Irish continued their momentum with a 5-2 lead in the second set. Three errors from Notre Dame allowed NC State to tie the set at six but the Pack could not find themselves a lead, as the Irish moved back ahead 13-10. NC State pulled within two points six different times but couldn't erase the deficit as Notre Dame ended the match with four of the final five points.
NC State showed some hope in the third set, playing tight with Notre Dame. Sitting at an 8-8 score, NC State took a 12-9 lead after a Notre Dame service error set up a block and kill for NC State. The Pack fought to hold its slim lead, 19-16, before Notre Dame came back late and tied the set at 19. A kill from Charley Niego put the Irish ahead, 20-19, for good.
