Volleyball Battles Against North Carolina in Five Sets

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team battled in a five-set loss to North Carolina, Wednesday evening in Reynolds Coliseum. North Carolina (4-9, 1-2 ACC) came away with the win after set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-12.
NC State (5-10, 0-3 ACC) was led by the trio of Melissa Evans, Jessica Kemp and Jade Parchment. Evans notched 15 kills while Kemp contributed a career-high 14 kills in addition to Parchment's season-best 14. Kemp was consistent for the Pack, hitting a personal-best .667 with just two errors.
It was also a career-night for Nina Sharpton and Grace Irvin. Sharpton recorded a personal-best 50 assists and 11 digs, marking her eighth double-double of the season. In her third match this season as libero, Irvin tallied 28 digs.
"It was a close game. It was quite the rollercoaster ride," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "It was up and down. Amazing things happened where we played amazing and then they played great at times and then they didn't play great at times. As a coach it was interesting, exhilarating at times and frustrating at times."
HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State only trailed once in the first set, at the opening point 1-0, before putting up five-straight to move ahead 5-1. The Tar Heels tried to respond, stringing together three points but were not able to move ahead. Despite neither team hitting above .100 in the first set, NC State capitalized on North Carolina's hitting errors to move ahead 18-14. The Tar Heels had five-straight points, pulling within two, 22-20, before their errors caught up with them and set up an NC State set win.
North Carolina took the second and third set, out hitting NC State .233 to .129. The Wolfpack fought back in the fourth set with its best hitting performance of the night. After being held to six kills in the first three sets combined, Parchment hit a perfect 6-of-6 in the fourth set to lead the charge for NC State. Kemp also was perfect in the fourth set, going 5-of-5. Parchment got the Pack going with four of the team's first eight points as NC State took an 8-3 lead. Following an early UNC timeout, the momentum stayed in the Pack's corner as NC State's lead expanded to 12-5. North Carolina pulled within two, 20-18, before three unanswered points from NC State gave them the distance they needed to force a decisive fifth set.
NC State kept its momentum going into the first part of the fifth set, scoring the first four points and taking an 8-3 lead. North Carolina quickly took the momentum back with five unanswered points, tying the match at eight. The Tar Heels ended the match with a 12-4 run.

- It was the fourth-straight match where the Pack out-dug its opponent, winning the battle 69-56 against the Tar Heels.
