Volleyball Sweeps Furman to Close Out Non-Conference Play

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The NC State volleyball team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 3-0 sweep on the road against Furman (0-11) Sunday afternoon. NC State (5-7) turns its attention to ACC play, starting next week at Louisville and Notre Dame.
The Pack were once again led by Melissa Evans who notched 13 kills in the three-set victory, while hitting at a season-high .407 clip. Jessica Kemp joined Evans in double-digits with 11 kills of her own while also hitting above .400. Lauryn Terry was the third Wolfpack player to have higher than a .400 hitting percentage, leading the team at .467.
Terry held down the middle for NC State, contributing nine kills and four blocks. Taylor Rowland made her Wolfpack debut playing in all three sets and notching seven kills next to a game-high six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite facing a 7-5 deficit in the first set, NC State took control with a 6-1 run which included three kills from Evans and a solo block by Jade Parchment. The Paladins hung around, eventually creeping back within one, 19-18. Furman would tie the match 21-21, before a service ace by Kemp and block from Rowland would put the Pack ahead by two and lead them to the first set win.
Furman looked to rebound nicely in the second set, opening to a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back blocks, NC State crept back to tie the set 7-7 but could not find the answer to take the lead until getting a side out off a Paladin serving error. The Pack then fired of a 6-0 run, behind Grace Irvin's serve for a 14-9 lead. With NC State ahead 19-12, Furman would fight back with four consecutive points on two separate occasions pulling within two. Following a timeout, Taylor Rowland recorded a kill before Irvin's service ace closed out the set.
NC State held Furman to a .030 hitting percentage in the third set, taking control early with an 11-3 lead. With NC State still up seven, 18-11, Furman had another 4-0 run as they tried to close the gap on the Pack but NC State didn't waiver, ending the match on a 7-2 run.

NC State now turns its attention to Atlantic Coast Conference play, opening the conference slate on the road. The Wolfpack travel to Louisville Friday, Sept. 27 before taking on Notre Dame Sunday, Sept. 29.

- Four of Rowland's six blocks came in the first set.
- Evans hit .800 in the first set, tallying eight kills. Evans has now hit double-digit kills in nine-straight matches.
- NC State led every statistical category, including out blocking Furman 12-10.
