DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 8 Duke on Sunday afternoon in its ACC opener at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. It marks the second consecutive year that a matchup between the Wolfpack and Blue Devils has resulted in a tie, as NC State moves to 5-3-1 (0-0-1 ACC) and Duke moves to 5-1-2 (0-0-1 ACC) on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Tziarra King converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to give the Pack a 1-0 advantage when Jameese Joseph was brought down inside the 18-yard box. It was her eighth goal of the season and 43rd of her career, and she moves into third by herself all-time in career scoring at NC State.
Duke's Ella Stevens managed to find the equalizer in the 88th minute off of a Sophie Jones assist, and forced the match to overtime.
In the two overtime periods the Pack controlled the game, only allowing the Blue Devils to put one shot on frame. NC State was knocking on the door with a combined five shots, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Jessica Berlin matched her career-high in goal with five saves, and four of them came in the first half of the contest.
NC State will continue its four-game road swing Thursday when it makes the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face No. 4 North Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the UNC Soccer Stadium, and the contest will be broadcast on the ACC Network. This will be its third of four matches to air on the network.
