ATHENS, GA. – Senior Lauryn Terry tied a program-record with 14 blocks Thursday evening against Georgia (7-3). Terry had her hands on 14 of the Pack's season-high 15 blocks, besting her previous career-high of 11. Her blocks are the most for an individual in a single-match in the rally scoring era of the program and the most overall since 1999.
"Our highlight of tonight was Lauryn's performance," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "We praised her afterwards in terms of, she started off shaky and she acknowledged that. But she turned it around and stepped up in crucial times and made some really, really good blocks for us that impacted the game in a really big way. I was proud of her for that."
The Wolfpack (4-6) fell 3-1 to Georgia (14-25, 25-20, 15-25, 20-25) in the hard fought match. NC State looks toward Friday with a 4 p.m. match against Arkansas in Athens.
Melissa Evans continued her hot streak with her seventh double-digit kill performance in a row, tallying 17 against the Bulldogs. Jade Parchment also contributed six kills while Nina Sharpton distributed the offense with a team-high 24 assists.
THOUGHTS FROM HAMPTON-KEITH
"There were times where we looked great and then there were times were we struggled and unfortunately we just couldn't get on the right side of that long enough to get the outcome that we wanted. We're still in that process of learning and growing. We get another chance at another team from the SEC tomorrow and hopefully we will show up ready to go."
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first set, NC State was unable to slow the Georgia offense, who hit at a .400 clip. The Pack saw a bright spot in the second set, getting out to a dominant 8-1 lead over Georgia. Despite Georgia fighting back to tie the match and eventually taking a 14-11 lead, NC State stayed in the set. Georgia's lead reached 17-13 before the Pack used three kills and a block by Terry and Parchment to once again tie the set, 17-17. Evans' fifth kill of the set pushed the Pack ahead for good, 18-17, before NC State came away with the set, 25-20.
After giving up the third set, the Wolfpack looked to bounce back with a strong fourth set following two early kills from Evans and Parchment. In what began as a tightly contested set with three lead changes, NC State kept the match close, 9-8. Georgia continued to try to create space, taking an 18-15 lead, but the Pack once again found an answer. After going down 23-17, Evans provided a kill late in the set and teamed up with Terry for a block to avoid match point but Georgia eventually clinched the set.
