Four Record Double-Digit Kills Against Arkansas

ATHENS, GA. – The NC State volleyball team was unable to complete a five-set comeback bid Friday evening against Arkansas (6-6) despite having four players record double-digit kills. After dropping the first two sets, the NC State (4-7) came back firing to convincingly take the next two and force a fifth set but the Razorbacks came out on top (25-22, 29-27, 19-25, 23-25, 15-10).
Melissa Evans led the team with 19 kills followed by Jade Parchment's season-high 15 on a .344 hitting performance. Jessica Kemp and Daniela McDonald followed with 11 and 10, respectively.
Lauryn Terry continued to be a force for NC State at the net, putting up six blocks and six kills. Nina Sharpton held down the setter role, recording a career-high 46 assists. Kaylee Frazier led the defensive effort with an impressive 26 digs on the night, just one shy of her career-high.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Arkansas controlling most of the first set, the second set proved to be a tightly contested battle that featured 12 ties and three lead changes between the two teams. Down 20-19, Parchment recorded back-to-back kills, putting the Pack ahead 21-20. Arkansas answered right back with two of their own, tying the set. With Arkansas up 25-24, Evans notched a kill to extend the set and hold off set point. NC State continued fending off the Razorbacks set points, but were unable to grab the lead. Arkansas eventually took the 2-0 lead on a kill and service ace.
The third set also remained close until three unanswered points gave Arkansas a 16-13 lead. Out of a timeout, NC State forced a pair of Razorback errors followed by Parchment's service ace that evened the set at 16. The run continued with a block from Terry and McDonald, pushing NC State ahead 17-16. Arkansas tied the match one more time, 17-17, but NC State fired off an 8-2 run to close out the set.
Arkansas largest lead of the fourth set came early, 10-6, but NC State began to chip away with back-to-back points on a kill from Terry and an Arkansas hitting error. Still down three, it was four-straight kills for the Pack including three from Kemp that gave the Pack a 14-13 lead. Arkansas would not lead again as Kemp continued rolling, getting her hands on the final two NC State points that forced a fifth set.
Tied in the fifth set, 4-4, a 4-0 run for the Razorbacks was all it would take for them to moved ahead 7-4. NC State closed the gap to one, 8-9, after back-to-back kills from Evans but Arkansas continued to find an answer with back-to-back kills of their own.
