BOONE, N.C. – NC State Volleyball won its first true road game of the season Saturday night in a five-set thriller against Appalachian State, closing out the Appalachian Invitational with a 2-1 record. Melissa Evans led the Pack with a career-high 22 kills followed by Daniela McDonald's personal-best 14. NC State (4-5) won, 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 15-9), after falling to Iowa State, 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 18-25, 25-20), earlier in the day.
It was Evans' sixth consecutive match with double-digit kills, following a 16-kill performance earlier in the day against Iowa State and 20 yesterday. McDonald hit double-digit kills for the first time in her career against Iowa State with 11 before besting it hours later.
Kaylee Frazier continued her outstanding start to the season as the Pack's libero, racking up 35 digs over the course of the day, 21 of which came against Appalachian State. She capped off her performance against the Mountaineers with 10 assists for her first career double-double. Nina Sharpton had 109 assists over the weekend, highlighted by her career-high Saturday night of 42.
"We're a pretty young team," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "We're learning and growing and I think part of that process is learning when to stay clean and play at a level consistently. And I think that's part of what we saw in those first three sets, just some of that inconsistency that has been happening. I thought in the fourth and fifth we did a really good job at locking in and cleaning some stuff up on our end."
Appalachian State (3-7) came out strong, winning the first set and holding Evans without a kill. The Wolfpack fired back to take the second, which included nine kills from Evans. Up 9-8 in the second set, NC State fired off a 9-1 run, doubling up the Mountaineers for an 18-9 lead. Appalachian State inched a little closer, 23-18, but after a service error Evans closed out the set with a kill.
After giving back the third set, NC State gave up a three-point, 9-6, lead early to the Mountaineers. The Wolfpack strung together multiple points, eventually tying the match at 10. Neither team gained much ground, keeping it tied at 17-17, until NC State had seven late unanswered points, putting them in position to extend the match.
After trading opening points back-and-forth, 3-3, Appalachian State took the first multi-point lead of the set, 5-3, on back-to-back kills from Emma Longley. A crucial sideout point came for the Pack with a kill from Lauryn Terry. A 5-0 run, behind Jade Parchment's serve pushed NC State to eight. With a 9-6 lead, Savannah Bryant entered the set to serve. Bryant put Appalachian State to the test and helped the Pack hang onto a 12-7 lead before running away with the set. Jessica Kemp dominated the fifth set for NC State, hitting 5-for-5.
Against Iowa State, the Pack looked strong with a 25-23 first set victory but the Cyclones used their blocks and a .315 hitting percentage to control the second and third set. NC State played from behind through most of the fourth set, but pieced it together late, looking to extend the match. Down 11-19, NC State matched Iowa State point-for-point followed three unanswered points moving to 22-16. The Wolpfack held off three match points from Iowa State but could not further close the gap.
