Nell Crosby Outran the 17-year old Record on Thursday Night
AUSTIN, Texas – Nell Crosby set a new school record as she ran her way to the 3,000m steeplechase final at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Colorado Springs, Colo., native crossed the finish line in 9:58.09 to finish fifth in her semifinal heat, automatically qualifying her for Saturday night's final. Crosby's time ranked 11th between the two heats.
Crosby outran the previous record of 10:01.00, set in 2002 by Katie Sabino. She stuck around with a group of six runners as Hannah Steelman (Wofford) began to pull away down the stretch, leaving four automatic qualifying spots up for grabs. Crosby created separation from Brianna Ilarda (Providence) to claim fifth place in the heat, powering through the final few hundred meters after a late struggle on the final water hurdle.
Saturday's final is set to begin at 6:54 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2.
