DURHAM, N.C. – In a wild comeback fashion with four runs in the ninth to erase its three-run deficit, No. 13 NC State baseball topped Wake Forest, 6-5, on Thursday evening in the ACC Championship at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
With its 19th comeback win of the season, the Wolfpack advances to the semifinals of the tournament Saturday. The bracket will be set Friday afternoon following the conclusion of the Georgia Tech and Duke game.
NC State improves to 42-15 on the year to make its first ACC semifinal appearance since 2015, while the Demon Deacons fall to 31-26.
Quick Hits
-The Deacs broke open the scoring in the second, plating four runs on three hits and a pair of errors. With the bases loaded on one out, DJ Poteet's 2-RBI single through the right side scored the first two runs. An error and sac fly to center field doubled their lead.
-After four scoreless innings, NC State scored two runs in the seventh on a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded and Brad Debo's RBI double to right center.
-Wake Forest walked in a run in the seventh, extending its lead to 5-2.
-Facing a three-run deficit in the ninth, NC State put its rally caps on and went to work. Will Wilson led off with a standup triple that landed just fair of the right field line, then Patrick Bailey and Tyler McDonough walked to load the bases on one out.
-Debo came up with a clutch 2-RBI single to right center to make it a one-run game, and pitcher David Harrison came in to pinch run for him with runners at the corners.
-Harrison took second on a wild pitch, putting two in scoring position for the Pack, and then Terrell Tatum's 2-RBI single to the second baseman brought the go-ahead run across. The base hit easily scored McDonough, and Harrison slid under the tag applied at home for the other RBI.
-Wake tried to force extra innings in the bottom half as ACC Player of the Year Bobby Seymour hit a leadoff double down the left field line to serve as the game-tying run on base, but the next three batters were retired in order.
