RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team (26-25, 6-14 ACC) dropped its Saturday outing against ACC foe Virginia (19-30, 7-16 ACC) in game two of its weekend series at Dail Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack fell, 8-5, as the Cavaliers took the series with their win.
OF NOTE:
- April Visser and Logan Morris hit home runs in back-to-back innings for the Pack's 54th and 55th long balls of the season. Visser's homer was her sixth of the season, as she has now gone yard in at least one game of each of the last three ACC series. Morris's home run was her ninth on the year and her first since NC State's game against Syracuse on April 7.
- Skylar Johnston added a home run in the top of the seventh inning with a solo shot to left field. It put the Pack's season total at 56, just two shy of tying for sixth in program history. Johnston's home run was her second hit of the day as a single through the left side in the fifth inning gave her a 2-for-4 clip.
- Sam Russ hit a perfect 3-for-3 on the outing and reached base safely in all four of her appearances at the plate. It was the 11th multi-hit performance of the Wolfpack sophomore's career and her second time this season notching a career-high three hits in a single outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Virginia struck in the top of the first inning as Lacy Smith singled up the middle to take first, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball and came home on another passed ball.
- Hayley Busby led off the second frame with a solo home run to left center to extend Virginia's lead.
- The Cavaliers also plated a pair of runs in their half of the fourth inning. Abigail Barber reached first on a Wolfpack error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out put her on third where a bouncing single by Ashlee Davis drove her in for a run. A sac fly in the very next at-bat scored another for Virginia to put the score at 4-0 in favor of the Cavaliers.
- Visser swung at the first pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning and launched a ball over the left center wall that put the Pack on the board.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, Logan Morris brought NC State within one as she sent a two-run homer that also went to left center. The bomb scored her and Russ, who had reached first on a leadoff walk to start the frame.
- Virginia rebuilt a multi-run lead in the top of the sixth inning as it plated four runs off of five hits, one of which was a three-run homer by Busby.
- NC State managed to add a pair of runs in the final two innings. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, and a single up the middle by Russ scored Natalie Jones. The team added a run in the top of the seventh inning as Johnston led off with a home run to left field.
ON DECK:
NC State will return to Dail Stadium Sunday afternoon for its series finale against the Cavaliers. First pitch is set for 12 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
