RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team (26-24, 6-13 ACC) dropped its series opener to Virginia (18-30, 6-16 ACC) on Friday evening at Dail Stadium, 12-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first inning, Virginia's Abigail Barber led off the top of the second with a solo homer to right field to put the Cavaliers on the board first.
- NC State secured a pair of quick outs in the top of the second inning, but the next five Virginia batters reached base to extend the Cavaliers' lead. Arizona Ritchie drew a two-out walk, and Lacy Smith singled up the middle to put Ritchie in scoring position. Back-to-back errors by the Wolfpack fielders scored both of them.
- With runners on the corners, Tori Gilbert hit a three-run homer to left center to plate three runs and extend Virginia's lead to 6-0.
- Virginia added three more runs off of three hits and a Wolfpack error in the top of the third inning.
- In the bottom of the third inning, Sam Russ collected the Pack's only hit of the outing, a bullet to first base. The hit allowed her to reach base for the second time on the outing after drawing a leadoff walk in the top of the first.
- Virginia scored a run in the top of the fourth, and a two-run homer in the top of the fifth plated the final runs for the Cavaliers.
ON DECK:
NC State will look to even the series against Virginia as the teams match up for their second of three weekend games on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. from Dail Stadium, and the matchup will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
