NC State Falls Short in Midweek Matchup with Campbell
4/24/2019 9:28:00 PM | Softball
After facing an early deficit, the Pack put together a three-run third inning to tie the score at four, but Campbell responded with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth to regain its lead. A late rally attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning saw NC State plate a pair of runs, but the Pack was unable to get any closer.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Campbell struck early as it scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning off of a two-run homer by Kayla Fredendall. Her home run drove in Kynadi Tipler, who reached base on a one-out single earlier in the frame.
- NC State got on the board in the bottom of the second. After a pair of outs, Angie Rizzi reached base on a muffed throw as Campbell's fielders tried to force her out at first and then moved to third as Chandley Garner singled to center field. With runners on the corners, Rizzi came home as the Camels tried to run down Garner in between first and second base. Garner was tagged for the third out of the inning but not before Rizzi reached home to score the run.
- The Camels built their lead up to three runs (4-1) as they put one on the board in each of the third and fourth innings.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Skylar Johnston and April Visser both drew walks to start the frame. A fielder's choice caught Visser out at second as Rizzi safely reached first and moved Johnston to third. Garner drew a walk to load up the bases.
- Madeline Curtis then entered as a pinch hitter, and it took just one swing of the bat for the Wolfpack sophomore to tie the score. She laced a double to center field to clear the bases, as her hit batted in Johnston, Visser and Garner.
- Campbell responded with three runs in the top of the fifth. Megan Mozingo hit a leadoff home run to right field to start the side, and the Camels went on to load up the bases on a single and a pair of walks. Another two walks with the bases loaded drove in two more runs as Campbell took the 7-4 lead.
- After the Camels added a run in the top of the sixth, NC State faced a four-run deficit heading into the final inning.
- Brigette Nordberg was the first member of the Pack to get on base in the bottom of the seventh as she reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop. Logan Morris doubled to left center to score Nordberg, making the score 8-5 in favor of the Camels with only one gone for the Pack.
- Johnston added a double in the very next at-bat as she ripped one down the left field line to drive Morris home.
- Visser managed to reach base on the Pack's third-straight hit of the inning, a single to shortstop, but a pair of strikeouts ended the game and gave Campbell the 8-6 win.
