RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (20-15) picked up its third-straight win on Tuesday evening at Dail Stadium when it defeated Winthrop (15-17), 4-2, in its first of two midweek contests this week.
The score was knotted at one for three and-a-half innings, and a combined three runs in the fourth and fifth gave the Wolfpack a 3-1 lead. The Eagles managed to cut its deficit to two in the seventh and put the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs, but Sydney Nester (10-4) recorded her 11th strikeout of the contest to give her team the win.
It was the third time this year Nester has recorded double-digit strikeouts in the circle, as she tossed her eighth complete game.
Offensively, the Pack collected nine hits in the contest, led by Sam Russ (2-for-4), Randi Farricker (2-for-3) and Natalie Jones (2-for-3). Additionally, Farricker drove in two runs and Russ scored two of her own.
How It Happened
-The Pack struck in the first inning, as Russ led off with a single through the left gap, stole second and scored on a two-out Winthrop error.
-Winthrop's Blake Wallert knotted the score at one in the second as her double to left center scored Brooke Ellison after a one-out hit-by-pitch and walk started the inning.
-Jones drove in NC State's second run of the contest in the fourth with a two-out RBI single through the left side. Skylar Johnston and Farricker led off the frame with back-to-back singles up the middle, and Angie Rizzi's sac bunt moved them around to start the threat.
-NC State extended its lead to three in the fifth on a sac fly and RBI double. Russ and Nordberg led off with outfield singles and pulled off the double steal to start the threat. Logan Morris's sac fly to left plated Russ, and Farricker's double to right field scored Nordberg from second.
-In the seventh, an error and one-out hit-by-pitch followed by a dropped third strike passed ball cut Winthrop's deficit to two. With two-outs in the frame and the go-ahead run at the plate, Nester held her composure and fanned the final batter to seal the win.
