Wolfpack Falls to Spartans, 2-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State softball team dropped a midweek decision to UNCG as it fell to the Spartans, 2-1, Wednesday evening at the UNCG Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Pack falls to 20-16 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 21-12 overall.
OF NOTE:
- Chandley Garner collected hits in both of her at-bats as she went 2-for-2 on the outing with singles in the third and fifth innings.
- Sam Russ added another multi-hit performance for the Pack as she went 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of base hits. Her home run in the top of the fourth inning was NC State's 40th as a team this season, which ties for eighth in program history.
- Devin Wallace was charged with the loss, despite giving up just one earned run on two hits. She fanned nine batters on the night and only surrendered one walk. It was the fifth time this season that Wallace has struck out nine or more batters in a single outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After two scoreless innings, UNCG struck first in the bottom of the third. Makenna Matthijs reached first on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a wild pitch followed by a passed ball. Marisa Sholtes' RBI single to left field scored Matthijs to put the Spartans on the board.
- It took one pitch in the top of the fourth for Russ to respond with a leadoff home run, her third of the season, that briefly erased UNCG's lead, but the Spartans tacked on another run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Stephanie Bryden got to first on Wallace's only walk of the night and moved to second on a dropped third strike. A fly out to center field advanced her to third before Hannah Kincer hit a rocket to center field that just beat the glove of Angie Rizzi to score Bryden for the game-winning run.
ON DECK:
NC State kicks off a four-game home stand this weekend as it returns to ACC action in a series against Syracuse. The Pack will face the Orange at 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday at Dail Stadium, and all three contests will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
