RALEIGH – NC State softball (23-21, 4-11 ACC) will play its final road games of the regular season this weekend as it makes the short trip to Durham, N.C. to take on Duke (23-25, 10-8 ACC) in a three-game series.
Due to inclement weather in the area on Friday, the teams will match up for a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m., and the series finale will be played at its originally scheduled time of 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
SERIES HISTORY:
This weekend marks the first in-season series played between NC State and Duke. Friday's game will be just the second all-time meeting between the two programs, as they first played each other in a midweek matchup during the 2018 regular season.
The Blue Devils took the win over the Pack in the first-ever meeting between the squads on April 18, 2018 in Dail Softball Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT:
NC State fell to Elon by a 5-4 score in its midweek matchup on Wednesday. After facing a three-run deficit, the Pack scored a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but the team's rally fell just short.
April Visser went yard for the second time in the past three games as she hit a one-out home run in the top of the second inning. She went 3-for-4 overall on the outing with the home run, an infield single and a two-RBI single. Her three hits marked a new career best, and she also tied her single-game career high in RBIs as she batted in three of the Pack's four runs on the night.
HOME RUN MINDSET:
After hitting four home runs in its past three games, NC State's season total is up to 48 long balls with 11 games left to play in the regular season. That number ranks eighth in program history in single-season home runs. The Pack needs just two more homers to tie and three more to take sole ownership of seventh in program history in that category.
STARTING STRONG:
NC State has been the first to score in 19 of its games during the 2019 campaign, and the team is a perfect 19-0 when scoring first in an outing. The Pack has gotten on the board during the first inning of 15 games this season and went on to secure the win in 13 of those 15 games.
PACK IN THE ACC:
The Pack ranks fourth in the ACC with its 48 home runs on the season, and that number also stands in the top 30 in the nation at 26th.
Brigette Nordberg's 14 home runs on the season are the third-most hit by an ACC player on the year, and she also ranks in the top 10 in the league with 41 RBIs and 93 total bases on the year.
NC State ranks second in the ACC in strikeouts as the pitching staff has fanned a combined 282 batters headed into the weekend series against Duke. The Pack's top pitchers both stand in the top six in the ACC in individual strikeouts, as Devin Wallace ranks fifth with 135 punch outs and Sydney Nester ranks sixth with 132.
SCOUTING DUKE:
The Blue Devils have won four ACC series this season, most recently picking up the final two games over Syracuse to take the series victory last weekend. One of those series wins came at Duke's home stadium, as the team has put together a .500 record (12-12) when playing at Duke Softball Stadium this season.
Three women on the roster are batting above .300 on the season, led by Deja Davis (.327) and Jameson Kavel (.303) who have both started all 48 games for Duke this season. Davis also leads the team in hits, as her 54 on the year rank fifth in the ACC.
Duke's pitching staff has combined to compile a 3.36 ERA during the 2019 campaign, paced by Peyton St. George (2.32) and Brianna Butler (2.84).
ON DECK:
NC State will return home for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a packed next week of action at Dail Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack hosts NC Central (April 23) and Campbell (April 24) for midweek games before welcoming Virginia to Raleigh for next weekend's series.
