DURHAM, N.C. – NC State softball (24-22, 5-12 ACC) secured its 24th win on the season, its most wins in a season since 2015, as it kicked off its series against Duke (24-26, 11-9 ACC) with a 2-1 victory in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium. The Pack split its series-opening doubleheader with the Blue Devils as it earned the victory in nine innings in game one before Duke picked up the 8-1 win in game two to even the series.
OF NOTE:
- NC State's win in game one was its 24th victory on the season, marking the most single-season victories since the 2015 campaign when the program won 38 games and reached an NCAA Super Regional.
- Sydney Nester impressed from the circle in the series opener as she pitched all nine innings to secure the complete-game victory. Nester gave up just three hits in NC State's 2-1 decision and fanned six batters on the way to securing her 13th win of the season.
- Brigette Nordberg and April Visser tallied multi-hit performances in the Pack's first game of the day, both going 2-for-4 on the outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
- NC State plated a run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Nordberg reached first on a walk, and Logan Morris was hit by a pitch in the very next at-bat to put the Wolfpack pair on first and second with just one out. A fly out put two down for NC State, but Visser sent an RBI single up the middle to drive Nordberg home.
- Duke quickly tied the score in the bottom of the same frame. Marissa Gagliano led off with a walk and scored as Rachel Abboud knocked a one-out single down the right field line.
- In what turned into a pitcher's duel, NC State and Duke posted seven scoreless frames as the contest went into extra innings.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Sam Russ reached first base on a fielder's choice. Nordberg collected her second hit of the outing, a two-out single up the middle that advanced Russ to third. Russ then stole home for what was the game-winning run after Nester retired Duke in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Game Two
- Visser hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the second as she lifted one to deep center field. The solo bomb put NC State up one early in the game.
- Duke went on to put together a surge in the bottom of the second inning as the Blue Devils manufactured eight runs off of seven hits, two of which were home runs, and a Wolfpack error to put the score at 8-1.
ON DECK:
NC State will return to Durham on Sunday afternoon for the rubber match to decide the series against Duke. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from the Duke Softball Stadium, and the contest will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
