ELON, N.C. – The NC State softball team plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning but fell just short to Elon as it dropped a 5-4 decision to the Phoenix Wednesday evening at Hunt Softball Park. With the loss, the Pack falls to 23-21 on the season, while Elon improves to 24-16-1 on the year.
OF NOTE:
- April Visser went yard for the second time in the past three games as she hit a home run with one out in the top of the second inning. It was the squad's 48th long ball of the 2019 campaign, improving its single-season mark that ranks eighth in program history.
- Visser went 3-for-4 on the outing with her home run in the top of the first, an infield single in the top of the sixth and a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh. The freshman batted in three of the Pack's four runs on the night, tying her career high in RBIs and setting a new career best in hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Elon jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning as Morgan Reich led off the game for the Phoenix by hitting a home run over the left field wall.
- Visser launched her third homer of the season out of the park with a solo shot to deep center field that evened the score between the Pack and the Phoenix.
- After a scoreless third inning, NC State took the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Brigette Nordberg drove Jessica Moore home from second base with a two-out double. Moore singled to left field to start the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kelli Wagner. The Pack's second out of the inning came on a ground out to the pitcher, but Nordberg came up to the plate and doubled to tally her 41st RBI of the season.
- The Phoenix managed to get on base only once in the second, third and fourth innings, but Elon plated four runs on three hits in the bottom fifth to regain a lead that it would not relinquish. Megan White reached first on a walk and was replaced on the base path by Grace Sherron. Callie Horn doubled down the left field line to take second and move Sherron to third, and Elise Walton added an RBI single that scored Sherron to tie the game at two. A ground out, a steal and a double scored Elon's other three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
- In the top of the seventh inning, Logan Morris drew a one-out walk, and Angie Rizzi singled with two outs to put them on first and second for the Pack. Chandley Garner was hit by a pitch to load up the bases, and Visser hit a two-out single to left center that plated Morris and Rizzi. A fly out to second base ended the Pack's late rally.
