NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The NC State softball team split its doubleheader against Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium as the Wolfpack won the first game, 9-4, and dropped a 12-3 decision in the second game of the day. The Fighting Irish claimed the series after also winning Friday night's series opener.
The Pack moves to 23-20 (4-11 ACC), and the Fighting Irish move to 26-14 (9-6 ACC).
OF NOTE:
- The Pack hit three home runs in the first game of the doubleheader, marking its first time hitting three home runs in a game since it did so against Charleston Southern on March 12. The three homers put NC State's team total at 47 on the year, which is just three shy of tying for seventh in program history in single-season home runs.
- Randi Farricker drove in a team-best four runs in the second game of the series. Farricker collected three hits, the most in a single game in her career, in the first contest of Saturday's doubleheader, and her four RBIs in that outing also marked a single-game career best for the red-shirt sophomore.
- With its win in game two of the series, NC State remained perfect on the season in contests during which it scores first. The Wolfpack has won all 19 of its games in which it was the first team to tally a run.
- Sydney Nester pitched a complete game in the Pack's 9-4 win on the afternoon. Though she was also credited with the loss in the third game of the series, Nester's record on the season stands at an impressive 12-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game Two
- NC State put a pair of runners on the base path early in the first inning as Sam Russ and Logan Morris ended up on the corners with two outs. Russ led off the inning with a walk and reached second as Skylar Johnston drove a hit into the middle of left field. A fielder's choice to second on Logan Morris's ground ball put Russ on third and Morris on first.
- The Pack struck first as Farricker stepped up to the plate and hit a deep ball over the left field wall for her fifth home run of the season. Her homer plated three runs to give NC State an early 3-0 advantage.
- Notre Dame also managed to score in the first inning as Ali Wester led off the Fighting Irish's half of the frame with a walk and reached second on a ground out to third base. Melissa Rochford then hit an RBI single to send Wester home.
- Farricker continued her impressive outing as she batted in another run in the top of the third inning. She scored Brigette Nordberg who ripped one to right center for a one-out double and took third base on a fielder's choice.
- The Fighting Irish once again responded with a run in the bottom of the same frame. Cait Brooks reached second with a leadoff hit and advanced to third on a long fly out to center field before Abby Sweet singled off of the center field wall to score her.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, Notre Dame drew to within one after Brooks led off with another double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on an RBI single by Sweet.
- April Visser's first hit of the series came in the top of the sixth inning as she launched the Pack's second three-run homer of the game to the corner of right field. The home run extended the Pack's lead to 7-3.
- Angie Rizzi made it back-to-back innings with a home run for the Wolfpack as she hit her fourth of the season in the top of the seventh to add to NC State's tally. The two-run shot scored Farricker, who had reached first base on an error by Notre Dame's shortstop.
- The Fighting Irish managed to add a final run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Brooks hit a solo shot over the wall to put the final score at 9-4 in favor of NC State.
Game Three
- Notre Dame took an early 2-0 lead in the second game of the day as Katie Marino reached first on a one-out walk and Brooks hit a home run to score them both.
- The Pack followed up by scoring three runs off of three hits in the second inning. Morris was hit by a pitch to advance to first, and Rizzi sent a fair ball skipping down the right field line. Her double put her on second and Morris on third with just one out, and Chandley Garner tripled down the right field line to score them both to tie the score.
- NC State added to its third inning tally with another run as it took a 3-2 lead off of an RBI single by Visser that drove Garner home from third base.
- In the bottom of the third inning, Notre Dame scored four runs off of a pair of hits and two Wolfpack errors to move back in front. Brooks kick-started the Fighting Irish's scoring as she once again knocked a two-run homer out of the park to plate the first two runs out of Notre Dame's four on the frame.
- The third-inning runs gave the Fighting Irish a lead that it would not relinquish as it also added six runs in the top of the fourth.
