
NC State Falls in Series Opener Against Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The NC State softball team (22-19, 3-10 ACC) fell in its series opener against Notre Dame (25-13, 8-5 ACC) as the Fighting Irish picked up the 11-2 win Friday evening at Melissa Cook Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Pack managed to get a pair of quick outs in the bottom of the first inning, but Cait Brooks singled to reach first and advanced to second as Melissa Rochford was hit by a pitch. Still with two gone for the Fighting Irish, Abby Sweet stepped up to the plate and sent a three-run homer over the left center wall to put Notre Dame on the board first.
- After a scoreless second inning, the Irish added a run in the bottom of the third to extend its lead. Rochford led off with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a Wolfpack error. Another fielder's choice sent Rochford to third, and she scored on a sac fly to put Notre Dame up 4-0.
- The bottom of the next frame saw Notre Dame plate seven runs on six hits and a pair of errors, highlighted by Rochford's three-run shot to center field.
- NC State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Skylar Johnston reached first base on a fielder's choice and moved to second as Logan Morris singled up the middle. With Morris and Johnston on first and second, respectively, Randi Farricker knocked a double to right field to score them for the Pack's two runs of the outing.
ON DECK:
NC State will wrap up the series against Notre Dame with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch for game two is set for 1 p.m. from Melissa Cook Stadium, and game three will be played approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game two. Both games will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
