Wolfpack Visits Notre Dame for Weekend ACC Series

RALEIGH – NC State softball (22-18, 3-9 ACC) is set to hit the road this weekend for its fifth ACC series of the year as it travels to Notre Dame (24-13, 7-5 ACC). The teams will play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Melissa Cook Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. All three games will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
SERIES HISTORY:
Friday's game marks the 14th meeting between Notre Dame and NC State. The Irish hold the narrow 7-6 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to the 2014 season.
NC State hosted Notre Dame for an ACC series on March 10, 2018. The teams split a Saturday doubleheader, with the Pack taking the second game by a 4-1 score to even the series. The rubber match between the Pack and the Irish was canceled due to inclement weather and was not rescheduled.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Pack picked up a 5-1 midweek win over East Carolina at home on Wednesday evening. NC State scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the first inning as seven Wolfpack batters reached base in the opening frame.
Kelli Wagner hit an RBI single to shortstop, and April Visser scored two with a double to right center for the Pack's two hits on the outing. Pitcher Devin Wallace fanned four batters as she picked up her 10th win of the season.
PACK IN THE ACC:
As a team, the Pack ranks fourth in the ACC with its 44 home runs on the season. The squad averages 1.10 homers per game, which also ranks fourth in the conference.
Brigette Nordberg's 14 home runs are the second-most hit by an ACC player on the year, and she is also second in the conference in home runs per game. Nordberg also ranks in the top five in the ACC with 40 RBIs.
Going into the weekend series, NC State stands atop the ACC in strikeouts. The pitching staff has fanned a combined 274 batters in 40 games during the 2019 season.
The Pack ranks fifth in the ACC in team ERA (2.87), led by Sydney Nester (2.50) and Wallace (2.67). Both pitchers rank in the top five in the conference in strikeouts, as Wallace is fourth in the ACC with 131 punch outs and Nester's 128 strikeouts stand at fifth in the league.
HOME RUN MINDSET:
The Pack moved into sole possession of eighth in program history in single-season home runs with a total of 44 on the 2019 season.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME:
The Irish rank second in the Coastal Division with their 7-5 record in league play, sitting behind defending national champion Florida State on that side of the conference. Notre Dame dropped its midweek game to Northwestern but swept Boston College in its most recent ACC series.
Notre Dame has six members of its squad who are batting .300 or better on the season, led by Ali Wester (.415) and Cait Brooks (.379). Wester (54) and Brooks (39) rank first and second on the team in hits, and Brooks also owns a team-best 13 home runs and 33 RBIs on the year. The Irish are hitting a combined .312 on the season, and the team ranks third in the ACC in hits with 300 on the year.
The Irish pitching staff owns a 2.90 combined earned-run average, paced by Payton Tidd whose 2.62 ERA leads the squad. Tidd is 15-6 on the season in 18 starts.
