RALEIGH – NC State softball used a five-run first inning and a solid defensive outing to defeat East Carolina, 5-1, Wednesday evening at Dail Stadium. With the win, the Pack improves to 22-18 on the season, while the Pirates fall to 19-21 on the year.
NC State plated all five of its runs in the bottom of the first inning as seven Wolfpack batters reached base in the opening frame. The teams then posted four scoreless innings before East Carolina hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth to put the final score at 5-1.
OF NOTE:
- Catcher Kelli Wagner and shortstop April Visser collected the Wolfpack's two hits on the outing, each coming with two gone for the Pack. Both of their hits came in the bottom of the first as Wagner batted in one with a single and Visser scored two with a double.
- Devin Wallace showed impressive command from the circle as she fanned four batters in six innings pitched on the night. She picked up the win, her 10th of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- NC State made it through the entire lineup in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Russ lined out to left field to open the game, but the Pack quickly loaded the bases as Brigette Nordberg walked, Skylar Johnston reached first on a hit by pitch, and Logan Morris also walked.
- Farricker moved to first on four balls as East Carolina pitcher Whitney Sanford walked in the first run of the game. Sanford was replaced by Erin Poepping with the bases still loaded for NC State.
- Jessica Moore was hit by a pitch to walk another run in for the Wolfpack, putting NC State up 2-0 with two outs.
- Angie Rizzi struck out swinging, putting two away, but Wagner stepped up to the plate and singled to shortstop to score Morris from third.
- In the very next at-bat, April Visser added a hit for the Pack as she doubled to right center to bring a pair of runs home. It marked the fourth multi-RBI game of the season for Visser.
- NC State leadoff hitter Russ came up to the plate for the second time in the inning but struck out swinging to end the frame.
- The Pack turned an impressive double play with the bases loaded for East Carolina in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Pirate catcher Ashley Weingartz grounded into the double play at third base, where Morris tagged to force Sydney Griggs out as she was coming from second. She then made the throw across the diamond to Farricker to get Weingartz out at first base.
- After four scoreless innings that saw Wallace fan three of her four batters on the night, East Carolina's Tate McClellan knocked a two-out solo homer over the wall in the corner of right field to put the Pirates on the board in the top of the sixth.
- East Carolina once again managed to load the bases in the top of the seventh with the tying run at the plate, but the batter lined out to first base as the Wolfpack secured the 5-1 win.
