GREENSBORO, N.C. – The ninth-ranked and third-seeded NC State women's basketball team (26-5) endured a 78-68 defeat against the third-ranked and second-seeded Louisville Cardinals (29-2) in the ACC Tournament semifinal round on Saturday afternoon inside the Greensboro Coliseum.
NC State led for 16:40 of what proved to be a very exciting game. After taking a 21-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter, the Wolfpack extended its lead to 10 points (32-22) when Aislinn Konig hit a three-pointer with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter. Foul trouble became an issue at this point, with starters DD Rogers and Kiara Leslie having to sit the bench with two fouls each. Louisville took advantage, ending the first half on a 22-2 run to take a 44-34 lead into the halftime break.
The Wolfpack patiently chipped away at this Louisville lead, reclaiming the advantage at 53-52 when DD Rogers scored in the paint with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter. Louisville took a narrow 59-57 edge into the final quarter, but scored seven straight points in the next two minutes to extend its advantage to nine points (66-57). NC State finished strong and pulled within six points during the final minute of the game, but would ultimately come no closer.
Freshman center Elissa Cunane led the Wolfpack with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. She was joined in double figures by 17 points from Kai Crutchfield (career high), 13 from Rogers, and 10 from Kiara Leslie.
ACC Player of the Year Asia Durr led all players with 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 16 points from Arica Carter and 14 from Sam Fuehring, who also chipped in a game-high 12 rebounds.
