
Advancing Again! NC State Defeats Maine in NCAA Tournament First Round

RALEIGH – The 10th-ranked and third-seeded NC State women's basketball team (27-5) earned a victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting 14th-seeded Maine by a final score of 63-51 on Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
The victory marked NC State's first 27-win season since the 1990-91 campaign and improved the Wolfpack to 16-2 at home this season and 46-6 inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum since the completed renovation that took place during the 2015-16 season. NC State also stretched its streak of non-conference victories in Raleigh to 28 consecutive games.
NC State shot a solid 24-of-52 (.462) from the field and led for 36:07 of the game's 40 minutes. The Wolfpack entered Saturday's game ranked 12th nationally in opponent field goal percentage (.361) and held the Black Bears even lower than that on Saturday, limiting them to a 20-of-59 (.339) success rate from the field.
Trailing 10-9 with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter, the Wolfpack ended the period on a 10-0 run to take a 19-10 advantage. NC State only let Maine within six points on two occasions in the second quarter (21-15 and 28-22), took a 39-22 lead into the halftime break, and never once allowed the Black Bears within single digits during the entirety of the second half.
Kiara Leslie led all players with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 16 points from freshman Elissa Cunane and 14 points from sophomore Kai Crutchfield. Cunane led all players with nine rebounds.
Maine's Parise Rossignol led the visitors with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 16 points from Dor Saar.
With the win, NC State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 and will host 17th-ranked and sixth-seeded Kentucky on Monday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm from Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
