RALEIGH – Despite tallying eight hits and loading the bases on three separate occasions, the NC State softball team (11-7) was unable to plate a run on Tuesday in its midweek contest with Valparaiso (6-8) at Dail Stadium.
A four-run burst from the Crusaders in the third inning was the difference as the Wolfpack's eight-game win streak was halted by the 4-0 loss.
Of Note
-Logan Morris (12), Brigette Nordberg (11) and Sam Russ (10) all extended their reached base streaks. Nordberg also extended her hit streak to eight consecutive games.
-Morris led the team with a 3-for-4 performance with a double and pair of singles, while Skylar Johnston and Russ collected two hits apiece in their four at-bats.
-Devin Wallace (5-3) was charged with the loss as she gave up the four runs on as many hits and a walk. She struck out five in the contest.
-Sydney Nester relieved Wallace in the fourth inning, fanning eight while giving up three hits.
How It Happened
-NC State's first scoring opportunity came in the first when it loaded up the bases on hits by Johnston and Morris as well as Jessica Moore's walk with two outs, but a strikeout ended the frame.
-Valpo's four runs on as many hits in the third was started by Carly Trepanier's RBI single to left field after back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with no outs. A pair of sacrifice flies by Brittany Anderson and Taylor Herschbach and bunt single from Jaymee Lawton plated the other three runs.
-The Pack looked to respond in the bottom frame with another pair of base hits from Johnston and Morris and a one-out walk by Natalie Jones, but an infield fly and strikeout allowed Valpo to escape the jam.
-In the seventh Brigette Nordberg led off with a single to third base, and Morris's one-out double to left put runners on second and third for the Pack. Moore's two-out hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and brought the game-tying run to the plate, but Jones lined into a double play to end the game.
On Deck
NC State will travel to College of Charleston's Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point Complex. The Pack is slated to play five games in its final weekend of nonconference action.
