CHARLESTON, S.C. – The NC State softball team (12-8) split its pair of games on Friday in College of Charleston's Charleston Invitational at Patriots Point Complex with Marist (3-4) and Rhode Island (3-8). Both contests were pitcher's duels as only a combined six hits were tallied and four runs were scored.
In its first game of the day with the Red Foxes, the Wolfpack plated three runs in the sixth inning and held off Marist's attempted rally in the seventh to earn a 3-0 win. In game two against the Rams, a pair of doubles in the fourth inning plated the game-winning run in the 1-0 loss.
Of Note (Game One)
-Sydney Nester (6-2) went the distance for the fourth time this season. She gave up two hits, issued one walk and struck out a career-high 12 batters in the shutout.
-Natalie Jones tallied the Pack's only hit of the contest, an RBI triple to left field in the sixth inning.
-The result was the team's third shutout of the season.
How It Happened (Game One)
-After five scoreless innings, NC State's three runs in the sixth proved to be the difference of the contest. An error, wild pitch and groundout to second allowed Logan Morris to threaten at third. Pinch hitter Randi Farricker walked and stole second to put two Pack runners in scoring position. Angie Rizzi brought the first run across as she laid down a bunt and Morris managed to beat the tag on the fielder's choice at home.
-Jones broke up Marist pitcher Kallen Leeseburg's no-hitter with an RBI triple to left field, scoring Rizzi to give NC State the 2-0 advantage.
-Kelli Wagner was hit-by-pitch to get on base and was caught stealing second, but Jones managed to cross home plate before the final out of the frame.
-In the seventh Marist managed to put the game-tying run at the plate after a two-out double and dropped third strike put runners at the corners, but Nester froze the final batter to complete the shutout.
Of Note (Game Two)
-Devin Wallace (5-5) threw her sixth complete game as she only allowed two hits and a walk in the 1-0 loss. The nine strikeouts in the contest matched her career high in a single game.
-Sam Russ tallied the team's only hit, a single up the middle in the first at-bat of the game, off of Rhode Island's pitcher Becca Rogers.
How It Happened (Game Two)
-Rhode Island broke the deadlock in the fourth inning when a pair of doubles by Faith Musselwhite and Ari Castillo with no outs brought what proved to be the game-winning run across.
-NC State's best scoring opportunity came in the sixth when Russ drew a leadoff walk and stole second and third with one out in the frame but was stranded on a pair of pop ups.
