BRIGHTON, Mass. – Highlighted by a six-run burst in the first along with four-run innings in the sixth and seventh, the NC State softball team (19-15, 2-7 ACC) clinched its first ACC series win of the season on Sunday with a 16-9 victory over Boston College (11-19, 3-6 ACC) at Harrington Athletics Village.
It was the Wolfpack's first ACC series win since April 7-9, 2017, when the Pack took its series at Georgia Tech, 2-1.
Of Note
-Sunday's result was the most runs scored in a single game in the 2019 season, and the second-most hits tallied in an outing.
-Brigette Nordberg belted her 14th home run of the season, which ranks second in the ACC. It was the team's 39th long ball of the year in just 34 games, and that number ranks ninth all-time in the Wolfpack's record books.
-Nordberg, Skylar Johnston and Chandley Garner all had multi-hit performances, while Sam Russ, Logan Morris, Nordberg and Johnston all scored three runs apiece. Angie Rizzi, Nordberg and Garner all turned in multi-RBI performances.
-Sydney Nester (9-4) collected the win as she went 5.1 innings in relief of starter Kama Woodall. Brittany Nimmo tossed the final two-thirds of the game.
How It Happened
-NC State scored six runs on three hits and an error in the first. Nordberg drove in the first three runs with a home run to left field after a single and hit-by-pitch started the game. A bases-loaded error followed by April Visser's 2-RBI single up the middle plated the other three runs.
-The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom frame via a sac fly to left and error.
-The Wolfpack took a 7-2 lead in the second on Rizzi's groundout to second that scored Nordberg. Nordberg drew a leadoff walk, and a fielder's choice and stolen base allowed her to threaten.
-BC countered with a run of its own in the home half of the inning thanks to Lexi DiEmmanuele's RBI triple to left that drove in Carlie Sanders after she reached base on a leadoff walk.
-Garner scored a run in the third to make the score 8-3, as she led off with a single to right field, and a groundout and pair of wild pitches allowed her to cross home plate.
-The Eagles cut their deficit to 8-4 in the fifth via a one-out double and back-to-back wild pitches.
-NC State's four-run inning on as many hits and an error in the sixth made the score 12-4, and another four-run burst on three hits and an error secured a 16-5 lead after six and-a-half innings.
-BC tacked on a run in the sixth in the midst of the Pack's two big innings. Emme Martinez reached on a fielder's choice, and back-to-back walks followed by a wild pitch eventually scored her.
-The Eagles attempted to rally with four runs in the bottom of the seventh with two RBI singles, an RBI double and triple as well as a Wolfpack error, but Randi Farricker gloved a grounder right to her and tagged first to clinch the win.
