
Pair of Silver-Medal Finishes Highlight Wolfpack’s Second Day of NCAA Championships Action

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Andreas Vazaios (200-yard individual medley) and NC State's 200-yard freestyle relay squad each earned second-place finishes to lead the Pack on the second day of action at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
The Pack men also saw the 400-yard medley relay team and three other individual swimmers garner All-America nods.
Through two full days of competition at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, NC State sits in fourth place with 136 points. California (212 points) holds the team lead, followed by Texas (188 points) in second and Indiana (155 points) in third.
200 FREE RELAY:
The Wolfpack sprinters came out hot in the 200-yard freestyle relay to give NC State its second silver medal in as many finals appearances in the early stages of the NCAA Championships. The relay crew clocked a 1:15.03 in the prelims to earn a spot in the championship final, where it then dropped time to clock in at 1:14.78 for second place.
Freshman Nyls Korstanje led off with a 19.03, his third lifetime best of the day that moved him to fourth in program history and made him the fastest freshman in program history in the 50-yard freestyle. Justin Ress (18.32), Jacob Molacek (18.81) and Giovanni Izzo (18.62) rounded out the relay for the Pack to garner All-America honors in the event.
200 IM:
For the second season in a row, Vazaios finished as runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley. He completed his last outing in the event in record-setting fashion as he lowered his own ACC and program records in the event to 1:39.35.
His career-best time came after a season-best swim in the prelims. The mark made him the third-fastest collegiate swimmer of all time and gained him All-America status in the event for the third season in a row.
400 MEDLEY RELAY:
The Pack also put together a solid relay performance in the 400-yard medley relay as it took fourth place in 3:03.25 to add to NC State's All-America honors on the day. Vazaios (45.00), Daniel Graber (52.42), Coleman Stewart (44.07) and Molacek (41.76) teamed up in the championship final to close out the Wolfpack's night in solid fashion.
Stewart impressed in the morning session with a 44.32 backstroke split. It was his third 100-yard backstroke time in a row that he set a lifetime best and bettered his ACC and program record in the event.
50 FREE:
NC State had two of its swimmers qualify for the evening finals session after posting top-16 times during the prelims.
Ress reached the championship final, where he touched the wall in 19.10 for eighth place to earn back-to-back All-America honors in the event.
Korstanje advanced to the consolation final in the first individual race of his NCAA Championships career, where he placed 12th overall in 19.18.
Molacek also saw action in the 50-yard freestyle prelims. He posted his best time of the season in the event, a 19.30 that placed 21st.
500 FREE:
The Pack was led by sophomore Eric Knowles, the 2019 ACC champion in the event, who earned a spot in the consolation final to garner Honorable Mention All-America honors for the first time in his career. Knowles went 4:14.22 to place 12th overall.
Jack McIntyre and Gil Kiesler also opened their NCAA Championships meet in the 500-yard freestyle. McIntyre's prelims time of 4:16.96 ranked 29th, and Kiesler's mark of 4:19.23 ranked 39th.

The Pack will return to action on Friday for another day of competition at the NCAA Championships. Prelims are set for an 11 a.m. EST start and will be streamed live on TexasSports.com/Watch. Friday's finals session will begin at 7 p.m. EST and will be aired live on ESPN3.
