
Stewart Wins Two Silvers, 200 Medley Relay Places Third at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – The Wolfpack men added three podium finishes to the 2019 NCAA Championships tally as junior Coleman Stewart took second place in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard medley relay squad placed third Friday evening.
In addition to those podium finishes, NC State saw five other individuals garner Honorable Mention All-America honors as Noah Hensley, James Bretscher, Jacob Molacek, Andreas Vazaios and Justin Ress represented the Pack in the consolation finals.
NC State heads into the final day of the national meet in fourth place with 215 points. California (372 points), Texas (329 points) and Indiana (277.5 points) hold the top three spots going into Saturday's sessions.
100 BACK:
NC State saw three of its men earn All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke. The Pack's three finalists were the most 100-backstroke All-Americans in a single season in program history.
Stewart became the third-fastest man in NCAA history as he took home silver in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 43.98. The mark once again lowered his ACC and program records and was the first sub-44 time of his career.
Seniors Andreas Vazaios and Justin Ress were in action in the consolation final. Vazaios posted a 45.40 on the night to rank 13th overall. After clocking a lifetime best 45.33 during the prelims, Ress placed 15th in 45.66 in the consolation final.
Noah Hensley also dropped time in the prelims to set a new career best. His 45.48 was good for 18th in the event.
100 FLY:
The Pack also stacked the 100-yard butterfly finals as three swimmers became All-Americans in the event, also the most single-season honors in the event in program history.
Stewart qualified for the championship final with the second-fastest time in the prelims and went on to add a silver medal to his and the Pack's count with his finish in the finals. Stewart picked up his second-place finish in record-setting time as he clocked a 44.46 to take ownership of the program and ACC records in the event. The time also moved him into the top eight all time.
Hensley and James Bretscher swam in the consolation final. Hensley went 45.48 during the morning session and went on to place 14th overall in 45.70 after finals action. Bretscher swam the fastest 100-yard butterfly time of his career during the prelims, a 45.61, and clocked a 46.10 in the consolation final for 16th place. The Honorable Mention All-America honors were the first for each Wolfpack senior.
Nyls Korstanje placed 19th in the prelims in 45.80.
200 MEDLEY RELAY:
NC State capped off another successful finals session by taking third place in the 200-yard medley relay.
Stewart, Daniel Graber, Korstanje, and Ress clocked in at 1:22.47 to take home bronze in the event. The mark was just .10 seconds shy of their ACC and program record that was set in their win at the 2019 ACC Championships earlier this month.
200 FREE:
Jacob Molacek kicked off his day of 200-yard freestyle action by winning his heat and clocking a lifetime best in the prelims. His 1:32.93 was good to move him into the evening consolation final. The Wolfpack senior went on to place 16th in 1:33.28 with his consolation final swim.
400 IM:
Eric Knowles was the only member of the Pack in action in the 400-yard individual medley. The sophomore placed 21st in the prelims with a mark of 3:44.34.
100 BREASTSTROKE:
Graber saw action in his first individual event of the NCAA Championships, as he placed 40th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke prelims with a time of 54.08.

NC State will wrap up its season with a final day of action at the 2019 NCAA Championships on Saturday. Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. EST and will be streamed live on TexasSports.com/Watch. The early heats of the 1650-yard freestyle will be raced beginning at 4:45 p.m. EST, and the finals are set to start at 7 p.m. EST. Saturday's afternoon mile races and evening finals session will be aired live on ESPN3.
