
Pack Men Set to Conclude Season at 2019 NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – The Wolfpack men will make the trip to Austin, Texas to wrap up the 2018-19 season at the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which will run Wednesday through Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
All four days of finals action will be covered on ESPN3, and the preliminary sessions will be streamed on TexasSports.com/Watch.
Admission is free for Wednesday evening's session, and standing room only tickets are available at the door every other day. Those tickets cost $10 apiece for the prelims and $15 apiece for the finals.
MEET NOTEBOOK:
NC State had 11 men's swimmers qualify for the 2019 NCAA Championships, and all five of the Wolfpack relays also posted times during the season that earned them selection to the national meet. A total of 15 Pack men will make the trip to Austin to represent the team this week.
NC State's men have placed fourth and taken home a team trophy three seasons in a row at the NCAA Championships. The Pack has seen at least one national champion crowned in each of the past three seasons dating back to the 2016 NCAA Championships.

2018-19 IN REVIEW:
The NC State men's swimming and diving program claimed its fifth straight conference title and the team's 29th overall conference title as it took first place at the 2019 ACC Championships. Junior Coleman Stewart was honored as ACC Meet Co-MVP after racking up two individual titles and a relay title and breaking a pair of ACC records during the meet. It marked the third straight season that a swimmer from NC State has been honored as meet MVP.
Every swimmer that competed for the Pack at the 2019 ACC Championships scored points for the team as NC State picked up a total of five gold medals and 17 podium finishes.
NC State entered postseason competition with a perfect 6-0 record in head-to-head matchups and picked up wins over three opponents that were ranked when the teams met – No. 2 Texas, No. 14 Virginia and No. 15 Arizona.
The Wolfpack men have been ranked in the top six of the CSCAA/TYR Top 25 for the entirety of the 2018-19 season and have spent the majority of the season ranked No. 4 or higher. NC State has remained the highest-ranked ACC squad for the entirety of the season.
NATIONAL SUCCESS UNDER HOLLOWAY:
Since Braden Holloway took over as head coach at the start of the 2011-12, the Wolfpack has enjoyed unparalleled success in the pool.
During the 2010-11 season, NC State did not score at the NCAA Championships. Since then, NC State's men have finished a program-best No. 4 at the NCAA Championships for three seasons in a row leading into 2019. NC State has won a national title in each of the last three seasons, including a program-best five event wins at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
2018 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS REWIND:
The Pack completed the most successful NCAA Championships run in program history at last season's meet as it secured a top-four team finish and took home national titles in five events.
The Pack's five national titles were a single-season program record as NC State brought home top finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard backstroke, 1650-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly.
NC State made a statement in the relays, claiming its two titles in record-setting fashion. The 800-yard freestyle relay squad of Andreas Vazaios, Ryan Held, Jacob Molacek and Justin Ress successfully defending the Pack's national title in the event and clocked a 6:05.31 to break the school, U.S. Open and NCAA records. Held, Molacek, Ress and Coleman Stewart went on to post a 2:44.31 to break the school, U.S. Open, American and NCAA records in their 400-yard freestyle relay win.
Stewart became the Pack's first individual national champion since 2006 by taking first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 44.58. He was the first of three NC State men who would win individual titles at the meet. Anton Ipsen ended his Wolfpack career with a win in the 1650-yard freestyle in ACC record time (14:24.43), and Vazaios took first in the 200-yard butterfly as he became the first man in the ACC to go under 1:40 in the event.
The members of the Pack earned All-America honors 15 times in individual events and also did so in all five relays, and five individuals were honored as Honorable Mention All-Americans.
TOP MARKS:
The Pack men enter the meet with 12 individual swims seeded in the top 16 on the official psych sheet, and seven of those times rank in the top eight headed into the NCAA Championships.
Stewart will look to defend his title in the 100-yard backstroke as he enters the meet with the top seed in the event. He also owns top-eight seeds in the 200-yard backstroke (No. 4) and the 100-yard butterfly (No. 5). Stewart found success in all three events at the 2019 ACC Championships. He won the ACC title in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 44.44 and then went on to beat that nation-best time with a blistering 44.36 leadoff split in the relay that night. Stewart also won the ACC title in the 200-yard backstroke (1:39.10) and took silver in the 100-yard butterfly (45.09).
Vazaios also returns to the 2019 NCAA Championships having won an individual title in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2018 meet. The Wolfpack senior owns the No. 8 seed (1:41.03) in the event heading into the national meet, and also owns the No. 4 seed in the 200-yard individual medley (1:41.30).
Noah Hensley joins Stewart with top-16 seeds in the 100-yard butterfly (45.33) and the 100-yard backstroke (45.49). The senior took third place at the ACC Championships in the 100-yard butterfly.
Ress comes into the sprint freestyle events with top-16 marks in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
NC State's distance swimmers will also look to make an impact. Sophomore Eric Knowles, who qualified to compete in three individual events, owns top-16 seeds in the 500-yard freestyle, in which he won the 2019 ACC title in 4:12.13, and the 400-yard individual medley. Jack McIntyre leads the Pack in the mile, with a 1650-yard freestyle time of 14:41.73 that enters the meet seeded 10th in the nation.
In addition, all five of the Pack's relays are seeded in the top 16. NC State's 200-yard medley relay (1:22.37) and 400-yard medley relay (3:03.26) times rank second and third, respectively, in the nation, with both of those times having been set by the men at the 2019 ACC Championships.
