Pack Men Take Home 800 Free Relay Silver to Open NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – NC State's men kicked off their 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships campaign in solid fashion as the 800-yard freestyle relay squad placed second Wednesday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Andreas Vazaios, Coleman Stewart, Jacob Molacek and Justin Ress put together a solid team effort across all four legs on their way to touching the wall in 6:06.63. The time was almost 10 seconds under NC State's seed time and best time of the season, and it marked the fifth season in a row that the Wolfpack has finished inside the top two in the event.

Vazaios led off with a 1:32.22 to put the men in second just behind Harvard after one leg. Stewart then clocked the Pack's fastest leg of the race, a 1:30.61 to give NC State a narrow lead at the halfway point. Swimming the third leg of the relay for the second season in a row, Molacek went 1:31.91 to establish a solid lead, and Ress anchored with a 1:31.89 to close out.

The squad's time was the fastest in the second heat, and that mark held up to rank second overall after the final heat of the evening.

The Pack resumes action at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, with prelims scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST and finals slated for 7 p.m. EST. The prelims will be streamed on TexasSports.com/Watch, and the evening session will be aired live on ESPN3.
