RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (17-14) snapped a six-game loss streak on Wednesday evening at Dail Stadium as it held off UNCW (20-14), 3-2.
The Wolfpack scored one run apiece in the second, third and fourth innings, and the Seahawks plated runs in the fourth and fifth to cut its deficit to one. UNCW had runners at the corners with one out in the fifth, but Sydney Nester entered the circle and fanned the final two batters of the side to get her team out of the inning. She proceeded to produce a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh to collect her first career save.
"It was a big team win today," said head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift. "It was something where we did enough to win. Our pitchers threw really well, I just think that the third time around in the lineup UNCW started catching up to sitting on speed. That's why I went to Sydney (Nester) in the fifth to change speeds. She kept them off-balance and attacked the zone.
"Defensively we played well, and offensively we got a few timely hits. It was all phases that pulled out the win, not really one specific thing."
Of Note
-Brigette Nordberg (two singles) and Logan Morris (single, double) both went 2-for-3 in the game, contributing to the team's six hits in the game. Nordberg currently leads the team with eight multi-hit performances this year.
-Devin Wallace (8-9) picked up the win after going four complete innings, and Nester earned the save after entering the game in the fifth with runners at the corners with one out.
-Wallace fanned nine and surrendered two earned runs on as many hits, while Nester struck out five for a combined 14 in the contest.
-Angie Rizzi hit her third homer of the season and the team's 37th of the year. The number ranks 10th all-time in the program record books.
How It Happened
-NC State opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Skylar Johnston led off with a single through the left side, and after a pair of groundouts moved her to third she scored on a dropped third strike wild pitch.
-The Pack doubled its lead in the third when Morris's double to right center drove in Nordberg from first after she reached on a two-out single.
-UNCW struck in the fourth thanks to Janel Gamache's double to right center that plated pinch runner Hunter Bizzell from third. Dominique Travers led off with a walk and was replaced by Bizzell on the base path, and back-to-back wild pitches put her at third to start the threat.
-NC State responded in the bottom frame with Rizzi's solo shot to left field.
-The Seahawks tacked on its second run in the fifth. Pinch hitter Carson Shaner hit a one-out single to the shortstop and took second on Kali Jones's hit-by-pitch, and crossed home plate on Rachel Willis's RBI single to center field.
