Two All-American Relays, Pair of 50 Free A Finalists Highlight Pack’s Day at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – The Wolfpack women kicked off action at the 2019 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships by placing six swims in Thursday night's finals at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Both of NC State's relays and four individuals garnered All-America honors on the night.
Through two full days of competition at the national meet, NC State sits in sixth place as a team with 86 points just behind Texas, which is currently in fifth place with 87 points.
400 MEDLEY RELAY:
The Pack's 400-yard medley relay squad was one of two NC State relays to qualify for the championship finals, where it took fourth place overall.
Haan, Sophie Hansson, Alons and Perry combined for a 3:27.86 time in the event, just .07 seconds off of the school record that they own, to gain All-American status.
50 FREE:
After the 50-yard freestyle morning prelims, NC State saw two Wolfpack women reach the championship final as junior Ky-lee Perry and freshman Kylee Alons each qualified with top-eight times. It was the first championship final appearance in an individual event for both swimmers.
In the finals, Perry lowered her own program record as she took seventh place in 21.57, and Alons touched the wall eighth in 21.89. The race marked the first time since 1979 that the Wolfpack women's program has had two of its swimmers garner All-American status in the same season in the event.
Olivia Calegan rounded out the Pack's lineup in the 50-yard freestyle with a 23.04 for 47th overall.
200 FREE RELAY:
NC State secured its first finals appearance and podium finish of the meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Perry, Alons, Sirena Rowe and Olivia Calegan posted a 1:27.12, the program's third-fastest time, in the prelims to place sixth and book a spot in the finals. During the evening's championship final, the Wolfpack women managed to move up a spot as Perry, Alons, Rowe and Elise Haan clocked in at 1:26.73 for fifth place.
200 IM:
Sophomore Julia Poole, who won the ACC title in the 200-yard individual medley last month, added to her successful sophomore campaign by garnering Honorable Mention All-America honors in the event on Thursday night. After clocking a 1:55.85 in the prelims, Poole advanced to the consolation final, where she placed 14th overall in 1:56.45.
Emma Muzzy (36th) and Makayla Sargent (39th) saw action in the 200-yard individual medley prelims on Thursday morning, with each swimming the fastest times of their NC State careers. Muzzy clocked a 1:57.76 that now ranks sixth in program history, and Sargent touched the wall in 1:58.15 for the No. 8 mark in NC State history.
500 FREE:
Kate Moore kicked off the 500-yard freestyle with a lifetime best in the prelims. Her 4:38.47 bettered her mark that ranks second in program history and pushed her into the consolation final. Moore went on to swim a 4:39.45 during the evening session to place 15th overall for Honorable Mention All-America honors.
Anna Jahns (4:41.15, 25th) and Tamila Holub (4:46.03, 47th) also competed in the 500-yard freestyle prelims.
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack will return to the pool on Friday for more action at the NCAA Championships. Prelims are set for a 10 a.m. EST start and will be streamed live on TexasSports.com/Watch. Friday's finals session will begin at 6 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
